8th Grade Promotion

Eighth Grade Promotion
Academic Performance and Conduct Criteria
 
 
Academic Performance:
In order to be eligible to participate in the 8th grade promotion event, 8th grade students must meet the following academic standards during the spring semester:
 
•    Passing grade (of D- or higher) in all classes in spring semester
 
A student with an Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) may be required to meet differential standards specifically stated in his/her IEP instead of the academic performance requirements.
 
 
Conduct:
In order to be eligible to participate in the 8th grade promotion event, 8th grade students must meet the following appropriate behavior requirement in the spring semester:

•   Students must not have any severe or excessive disciplinary incidents during the spring semester as determined by site administration.

In order to be eligible to participate in the 8th grade promotion event, 8th grade students must have all debts cleared through the office and library, including missing or damaged textbooks.

Appeals Process:
Any student that does not qualify for the 8th grade promotion event shall be given a written notice stating the reason(s) for not qualifying and a description of the appeals process.
The Appeals Panel will consist of Washington Unified School District administrators. Any student who wishes to appeal, may do so by submitting a formal letter of appeal. Students may also include letters from parents, teachers, or other staff members as part of their appeal. The Appeals Panel will make a decision based on the information presented and will notify the parents and students in writing.
 
The decision of the Appeals Panel shall be final.

Promotion Ceremony
  • The Promotion will be held on the last day of school. 
  • The Promotion Criteria stated above will be used to determine who is eligible to attend the ceremony. 
  • Students who do not meet requirements will be sent to another class during the ceremony.

Ceremony Dress Code for Students
Staff will inform students and their families of the following dress code for promotion, and will include an invitation to bring questionable outfits to an administrator for approval if the family has questions. Standards of modesty described in the general (non-uniform) dress code will be upheld.
8th Grade Participation in End of the Year Activities and Events Policy

In order for 8th graders to participate in the end of the year 8th grade activities and events, students must meet certain criteria.
Academics:
  • Passing grade (of D- or higher) in all core classes
  • A student with an Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) may be required to meet differential standards specifically stated in his/her IEP instead of the academic performance requirements.
Conduct/Behavior:
  • No suspensions (In school or Out of school)
  • No excessive number of office referrals (More than 5)
  • No excessive uniform violations (More than 6)

Attendance:

  • No more than 10 absences for the year (excused or unexcused)
  • No more than 20 tardies for the year (excused or unexcused)

Students will be given the opportunity to appeal in March. Any student that does not qualify for the 8th grade activities and events shall be given a written notice stating the reason(s) for not qualifying and a description of the appeals process.
